Taiwanese scholars have correctly pointed out that non-charismatic churches in Taiwan were heavily influenced by the charismatic message starting in 1980, but hardly any research details related events leading up to 1980. Current literature also does not explore the development of the Charismatic Movement from 1970 to 1995 in Taiwan against Taiwan's sociopolitical or ecclesiastical context at length.Relying on written and oral sources, the bulk of this dissertation, therefore, was devoted to studying charismatic activities in Taiwan from 1958 to 1979. It describes and analyzes how the charismatic missionaries' efforts in Taiwan in the 1970s-many of whom were products of the global Holy Spirit renewal movement-shaped the theological convictions of later Taiwanese charismatic leaders who came to be in the leading position in the 1980s. This study also explores several more significant developments in the Taiwanese Church-under the leadership of Taiwanese charismatic leaders-which contributed to the gradual and widespread recognition of the Charismatic Movement in Taiwan from 1980 to 1995. These discussions give consideration to Taiwan's pre-1980 ecclesiastical climate that showed suspicion and fear towards the Pentecostal-Charismatic Movement at large, and ways in which the ill-fated reputation of lingen pai (pentecostal-charismatic groups or Christians) among Taiwanese Christians was gradually redeemed. As a result, this dissertation represents a first-step effort in collecting primary documents, and organizing the findings into a more comprehensive picture of the historical development of the Charismatic Movement in Taiwan from 1900 to 2000, while giving special attention to the period from 1970 to 1995.This project concludes that the Charismatic Movement in Taiwan in the first half of the 1980s was a "surprising outgrowth" of church growth initiatives. What is equally unique about the history of the Charismatic Movement in the non-Christian Taiwan, is that it was the Year 2000 Gospel Movement, a non-charismatic evangelistic movement initiated by the Taiwanese Church, that prepared a favorable climate for the charismatic message to reach the larger Taiwanese Church from around 1988 to 1994. Taiwan's church history not only enriches but also complicates the global Charismatic Christianity.
