Online education enrollment has been increasing; however, research indicates that student retention and student success rates are not keeping pace with those associated with classes taught on campus. The purposes of this study was to identify instructional design practices that educators can use to improve the online learning experience for language learners.A systematic review identified findings in the online language learning and instructional design literature in public research databases to identify publications between 2013 and mid-2018. Twenty-two articles were filtered for association with the research questions, and I coded the data based on variables in the codebook. The data included demographic information (year of publication, language studied, and country) and pedagogical topics such as purpose, theory, and instructional design features for online language learning and technology. I reviewed the 22 articles, analyzed findings, identified three categories of topics related to online language instruction: pedagogy, psychological aspects, and time and space, and discussed these three topics. In the summary of the review of the literature, I identified areas for future research. Based on the findings, I made recommendations for those who administer, support, and teach online language learning. In the 22 reviewed articles, researchers reported mostly positive findings on research with online language learning in secondary and higher education settings, as well as organizations. They recommended interactive, student-centric instructional design for online language learning classes: (a) Plan time, budget, and resources to design, develop, implement, and sustain ongoing and growing online instruction; (b) use multimodal online instructional activities (e.g., audio, video, text, images); (c) use a blend of synchronous and asynchronous online activities; (d) schedule and invest ample time to provide feedback to learners in a variety of forms, including automated, individualized, and customized feedback in a variety of modalities (e.g., written, audio, video); and (e) provide time and resources for training learners, tutors, instructors, and technology support staff. These findings will inform leaders, policymakers, and practitioners in education and organizations who strive to serve online language learners.
