Many studies have discussed the importance of including culturally sensitive education in the current undergraduate nursing curriculum. However, few studies have spoken to strategies to effectively accomplish the task. Many undergraduate nursing programs are exploring the option of studying abroad to introduce students to cultures outside of the United States with the hope of fostering culturally sensitive and competent nurses. To help build upon a transformative learning process and provide a safe environment for students to grow, reflective journaling can be added as an intervention to such programs. This retrospective quantitative quasi-experimental project examined both pre- and post-cultural competency scores for 15 undergraduate nursing students who engaged in reflective journaling on a three-week trip to Thailand, finding that cultural competency did increase.
