The economic growth and cultural prosperity of Lingnan Region, as well as the intellectual movement referred to as jinshixue in Qing Dynasty, had significantly positive influences on the seal engraving community of Lingnan in the Republic of China. Many outstanding seal carvers of Lingnan in this time carefully studied the ancient seals, the typical Zhe School and Wan School seals, but more importantly, they inherited the style of Huang Mufu(1849-1908), which was clean and serene. Huang was renowned as the originator of the Lingnan school. Therefore, the Lingnan School of seal engraving art rose out of the ordinary and became one of the most important schools in the Republic of China. This dissertation is a study of the three masters of Lingnan seal engraving in the Republic of China, namely Yi Ru(1874-1941), Li Yinsang(1880-ca.1945) and Deng Erya(1884-1954). They are acknowledged as "the three main pillars supporting the seal carving world in the Lingnan Region". The first chapter of this thesis investigates the backgrounds which enabled the Lingnan seal engraving art to develop and flourish in the late Qing and the Republic of China. The second chapter focuses on the lives of the three masters, as well as their talents and abilities. The third chapter studies the artistic styles and features of their seal carvings, expounds their theories in seal engraving and introduces their followers. The fourth chapter analyzes their albums of seal impressions and the original seals based on the collected sources. This research tries to explore the historical success of Lingnan seal engraving as one of the five unique schools and the contributions of the three masters. As this study demonstrates, the three masters, whom Huang Mufu had taught, instructed or inspired, gained the basic knowledge and formed their early style of seal engraving in Lingnan Region. However, due to the continual warfare in Guangdong Province and other reasons, Yi Ru went northward to study and work, Deng Erya took refuge in Hong Kong, and only Li Yinsang still stayed in Guangzhou. Because of living in different cities, their diverse personalities, talents, experiences and distinct circles of friends, they created their own seal engraving styles: Yi formed a rustic and natural style, Li focused on the ancient seals prior to Qin Dynasty, and Deng pursued smooth and elegant strokes. So, they shared the same cultural background yet formed different art styles. All in all, the three masters established a distinctive style in seal engraving that excelled their predecessors, overcoming the geographical constraints of the region.
