Thesis (M.A.)--Morgan State University, 2020.
This item must not be sold to any third party vendors.
This thesis will locate and examine the sublime moments that emerge from three films written and directed by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne-Le Fils (The Son, 2002), L' Enfant (The Child, 2005), and Le Gamin au Velo (The Kid with the Bike, 2011). This analysis will reveal a new type of cinematic sublime by employing Kenneth Burke's dramatism method of analysis using the Act/Purpose ratio. This new perspective allows for ordinary acts to become agents for transition and change. The cumulative effect of these moments of the sublime leads to a hard-fought moral and spiritual expansion, an expansion that exists in the present, the here and the now. Through movement and act the sublime emerges as an interaction of levels of existence, united and visible at the same time, giving a new perspective to an otherwise ordinary act. Film still frames from the selected films will be used to support the main ideas of the thesis. The selected still film frames will be presented like citations of lines from poetry or excerpts from a narrative text. The study and exploration of the sublime is in itself is a method to uncover and discover new (and multi) meanings in written and spoken words, gestures, art, music, and so on. The sublime moments that emerge from these films highlight a deep vulnerability andresiliency that is the human condition.
