Crippling the Body Politic argues that physical disability was a generative force in the rise of US nationalism, imperialism, and mass capitalism. I contend that, throughout the main period of national growth (1803-1898), disabled bodies symbolized an expansionist body politic: their deformities and lacks invited augmentation and amendment. Through a methodology that combines psychoanalysis, Marxist economics, transnational approaches, and political theory, I identify how several "fantasies of disability" redefined bodies and nations as unbounded constructs in a perpetual quest for aggrandizement rather than completion. Writers such as Washington Irving, Catharine Sedgwick, William Dean Howells, Joseph Kirkland as well as the freak show performer Charles Stratton deployed the abnormal anatomies of invalid pioneers, vanishing Indians, dwarf minstrel performers, and Civil War amputees to conjure alternative US geographies and temporalities. Whereas literary critics have related disability exclusively to notions of stigma and vulnerability, I approach it as the object of collective fantasy, teasing out a deliberate overlap between figurative bodies politic and those material, sentient bodies injured by slavery, removal, warfare, and industrialization. I chart thus an understudied process in which the symbolic grammar of disability informed idealized representations of the national body while justifying violence against racialized, gendered, and disabled bodies. Studying this process in detail offers a blueprint for rethinking the indispensability of corporeal metaphors in figurations of nation and empire.
