Adolescence is a time of major biological and psychological changes (Blakemore, 2017). An intentionally landscaped school campus can reduce the stress from those changes (Chawla, 2015; Chawla et al., 2014). The inability to cope with the amount of stress that adolescents experience from issues relating to school, social, family, and their future greatly affects their mental health (Byrne, Davenport, & Mazanov, 2007; Low et al., 2012; Moksnes, Moljord, Espnes, & Byrne, 2010; Pascoe, Hetrick, & Parker, 2019), and the levels of stress in adolescents in America is growing (Low et al., 2012; Mental Health in America, 2018). In this phenomenological, qualitative study, 14 students at an intentionally landscaped campus in grades 6-12 were interviewed about which issues cause the most stress for them and which areas of campus facilitate the most stress reduction. The findings suggest that a quad area reduces stress for adolescents, with trees and vegetation, window views from classrooms, quiet areas to relax, and sightlines to greenspace, and produces positive mental health. Implications for generalizing the findings to new and already-established schools is discussed.
