Complex societies, from Antiquity to the present, have been characterized by social hierarchies, established first through rankings of individuals within tribal structures and later via systems of division based on bloodlines, wealth, and professions. The emergence of social/broadcast media has proliferated the symbols of each class, as well as awareness of their respective lifestyles.Within social/broadcast media, content creators exploit social class symbolism to reify their own status, or that of their character archetypes. This popularization of these visual symbols has resulted in a strengthening of upper class distinctiveness and desirability, thereby further trampling the lower class. Media glosses over classism and social mobility access by portraying character archetypes and situational stereotypes, rather than dynamic nuance of social class. Avid users of social/broadcast media are particularly influenced by this representation. This thesis serves to raise awareness of the way social/broadcast media's framing of social class creates negative stereotypes. I aim to use design criticism-using methods such as cultural probes, character analysis, visual metaphors, games, sculptures, and design fiction-to expose and generate awareness about media representation of class.
