The focus of this project was to learn how professionals describe their experiences of providing therapy and conducting research with diverse populations, to investigate the information and techniques professionals use in their research practices, and to learn firsthand what the field has accomplished and where the field needs to go to advance and explore these issues. Little previous research has explored the opinions and experiences of multicultural research professionals. Consensual qualitative research methods were used to analyze a round table discussion among multicultural psychotherapy therapist-researchers who reported about their career experiences. Eight primary domains were identified in the discussion, including: 1. Why the professional does the work, 2: Social Justice and advocacy in psychotherapy, 3: Applied research, 4: Need for systemic change, 5: Deficiencies in training and multicultural psychotherapy research, 6: Broadening multiculturalism, 7: Future ideas in multicultural psychotherapy research, and 8: Minimal content. Cross analysis revealed three typical core ideas (those expressed by more than half the participants), including: the need for greater multicultural competence and improving outcomes for diverse groups in psychotherapy; the need for and specific examples of innovative theoretical models and multicultural psychotherapy techniques; and the lack of evidence regarding multicultural competence and how to communicate with diverse clients. No general core ideas (expressed by all participants) were identified. Several variant and rare core ideas also emerged.
