Women's presence in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is lower than expected, as initiatives and directives developed to increase American black women's presence in STEM are producing increased numbers of candidates, but not as quickly as desired. Numerous studies previously conducted on all women in STEM provided information based on the perspectives of professors, teachers, or parents, or contained a focus on education. Unfortunately, the limited studies about black women in STEM fields did not include input from the black women themselves. This ethnographic study was conducted to investigate the culture of American black women in STEM. The research question steering this study was: What defines the culture of black American women in STEM? The theoretical frameworks guiding this study to answer the research question were Collins's black feminist thought and Bronfenbrenner's bioecological system. The cultural aspects of the participants' experiences uncovered themes for further investigation in efforts to encourage black women to pursue a career in STEM. The researcher used fieldwork to observe five American black women who graduated from a historically black college or university to uncover how cultural aspects affected their STEM profession. The results of this study revealed American black women to be resilient, highly educated, and successful.
