The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to determine the Native American's perspective about physical activity and barriers to exercise. The results of this research provided an understanding of the exercise behaviors of Southwestern Native Americans from their viewpoint. The application of effective behavioral techniques can be applied from insight learned from using the theoretical framework of the Transtheoretical model constructs of environmental reevaluation, counterconditioning, helping relationships, and self-liberation. By gaining a clearer understanding of the adaption and maintenance of physical activity among the participants, the findings can aid in interventions designed to promote regular exercise among this at-risk and increasingly sedentary group. The researcher explored and described the lived exercise experiences of 12 Native Americans between the ages of 20 and 65 years old, who were regularly physically active within the past two years living in Southwestern Arizona. The participants were selected through convenience sampling to meet certain hands-on criteria of the researcher and were willing to participate in the study. Data collection included data from semi structured, Zoom interviews to discover the relationships among the theoretical constructs and regular exercise adherence, environmental facilitators, or barriers, and to discover culturally appropriate forms of exercise. The researcher explored the analysis of the emerged themes using a qualitative research method. The significance of this study involved identifying and explaining the factors and experiences influencing Native American participants' decisions about regular engagement in culturally appropriate physical activity. Determining the influencing factors regarding the adherence to physical activity from a cultural and personal viewpoint provided significant insight for scholars, leaders, and members working among the tribal community. Closely analyzing the participants adherence to exercise, resulting in movement through the stages of change, yielded significant implications to understand what fostered regular exercise participation such as access to transportation and recreational facilities and a supportive social environment to exercise and participate in cultural dancing. The results can help facilitate interventions targeting exercise adherence among a group where exercise levels have declined in recent decades, which would have significant effects on the Native American populations health and overall quality of life in their environment.
