This collection of papers explores different elements of popular culture and how they reflect our world. The first is about the history of the comic medium as it relates to the development of New York in the late 19th to the 20th century. Attention is paid to the idea of modernity, how city planning inherited this, and how comic books reflect this philosophy in their form and content. The second is about nostalgia in American cinema. With many popular films of the 2010s looking back at the 1980s, these time periods are well-suited for exploration. National trauma and how the government and the people deal with it are some of the key themes of this work. The third is about popular music in the Philippines and how it reflects the country's postcolonial era. OPM, or Original Pinoy/Pilipino Music, is an umbrella term for the popular music produced in the country. As it carries the name of the country and the people, examining the medium's history is a way to see how the nation deals with its postcolonial identity at any point in time.
