The purpose of this autoethnographic dissertation is for me to understand my transformational leadership journey as a Hmong woman in Wisconsin. This study revealed unique challenges I encountered and factors that helped me successfully navigate difficult situations. As a result, I painted my own story cloth to, culturally and visibly, share my leadership journey and empower other Hmong women to share theirs, too. This autoethnographic study was guided by the following theories: Leadership Theory, Transformational Leadership Theory, Feminist Theory, and Relational-Cultural Theory. Also, the literature review included background information on Hmong history, Hmong culture, Hmong story cloth, Hmong women, Hmong women leaders in Wisconsin, and leadership. The method used is Narrative Inquiry, specifically through storytelling which is an integral part of the Hmong culture.Based on my stories, verified through member checking, the following themes emerged in terms of challenges and successes. The challenges came from self-efficacy, gender inequality, identity conflict, and lack of role models. The successes came from personal motivation, resilience, family and community support, and empowerment. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) form 5X (short form) was used as a tool to rate myself and for others to rate me. For all ratings, including self and others, my scores were as follows: 3.75 (IA), 3.64 (IB), 3.59 (IM), 3.32 (IS), and 3.39 (IC). My score was the highest in (IA) or Idealized Attributes and lowest in (IS) or Intellectual Stimulation. I compared my score to the norm table on Appendix B of the MLQ Manual. A score of 3.75 was at the 80th percentile, meaning 80% of the normed population scored lower than I and 20% scored higher than I (Mind Garden, Inc.). Other comparison scores are reflected in Chapter Four, including scores for self-rating, same level rating, lower level rating, and other rating.Through this dissertation, I will enhance the literature and image of leadership to include Hmong women leaders and their stories. In addition, this study will change the narrative of Hmong women as they transform themselves and the Hmong culture. Finally, as organizations and communities continue to grow and change, so does the need for representation in leadership.
