Children and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries like the Philippines are faced with frequent exposure to risk factors that may lead to the development of traumatic symptoms. Research has suggested that early intervention and implementation of resilience strategies with children have proven to be most effective. Several trauma-focused treatment modalities have been developed and shown to be effective in Westernized countries, yet literature of the application and cultural adaptation of these models in other countries is limited. Trauma Informed Philippine Psychotherapy (TIPP) is a culturally adapted trauma informed model developed through the collaboration of Philippine mental health professionals and U.S. mental health professionals. This model combines the common elements found across several trauma-informed models and Philippine culture as well as an understanding of the traumas experienced by children and adolescents in the Philippines. This dissertation documents views from 24 Philippine mental health workers who had previously participated in TIPP training. Through open-ended interview questions conducted in a group setting, the researcher examined the plausibility and applicability of TIPP in a child and adolescent group setting based on feedback from Philippine mental health professionals. A conventional content analysis method for coding focus group interviews, revealed three themes: (a) benefits of utilizing TIPP in a group treatment modality, (b) modifications of TIPP when working within a group format, and (c) areas of concern and challenges in delivering TIPP. Participant responses captured the ecological domains that impact and interact with their clients. These ecosystemic elements mirror the Philippines' rich culture and collectivistic worldview. By obtaining this information, the current TIPP model would be modified to aid mental health professionals in the Philippines in providing care to a greater number of children in need of immediate services.
