Traditionally, instructors have used "the research paper" despite criticisms that it does little to prepare students for future research writing, reduces rhetorical acts to reports, and conflicts with process oriented student-centered teaching. Alternative assignments such as the I-Search, the sociolinguistic project, the ethnographic project, and the cross-disciplinary project also prove flawed. An integrative approach, however, allows students to learn research by encouraging them to utilize a variety of sources in any piece of writing. The integrative approach allows instructors to implement research instruction with writing assignments already present in the curriculum, thus alleviating the need to make a false distinction between research writing and other writing. An integrative approach can also provide a better alternative to traditional assignments for ESL programs.Subjects--Topical Terms:
