Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 1993.

The thesis examines eight children's books written in the 19th and 20th century in England, Germany and America. Among them are "Struwwelpeter" the best-selling children's book ever since and Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things are". The 19th century view of the child was either romantic or the child was seen as being innately evil and therefore requiring strict education. This negative view of childhood was best reflected in the early 19th century English Cautionary Tales and, thirty years later in the German picture book "Struwwelpeter". Before the publication of "Struwwelpeter" the image of childhood presented in German picture books was romantic. Although modern children's literature in Germany is more childcentered, the romantic image of childhood is still prevailing. Psychoanalytic theory, although European in origin, had more impact on American authors who are more open to the darker impulses in children. Modern children's literature in America recognizes more of children's developmental realities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
