There is growing recognition for contemporary artists whose works and lives are affected by mental health conditions. The increased visibility is due to a societal paradigm shift reflected in changing attitudes and approaches in the realm of mental health disorders. Within the world of art, there has long been a recognizable link between "artistic geniuses" who proved to yield significant creativity in the midst of their mental health disorders. Considering the effects of an artist's unique mental health conditions in correlation with their work has become a rich topic of interest for many art historians. This study analyzes three contemporary artists with diverse mental health illnesses: Steven Wiltshire, Kim Noble, and Yayoi Kusama. These artists are better understood through study of their mental health disorders, which provides insight into how these disorders affect their minds, emotions, and physical bodies, thus changing the scope of their artwork. Understanding that their artwork is a direct translation of their state of mind is the consistent claim of our study of these artists. Furthermore, we maintain that the art world's recent embrace of these artists mirrors broader changes in our society.
