Many children participate in some form of extracurricular activities (EA) throughout their youth. When children first begin participating in extracurricular activities, they may try a variety of activities at an early age, but eventually settle on one activity. For the focus of this study, the definition of elite extracurricular activities (EEA) was created to capture a subset of students involved in EA in a specialized and encompassing way. EEA may involve a vetting process, for example tryouts or auditions; involve a participation fee; have a required practice schedule/classes; and usually involve at least one culminating game, meet, test, or performance. The literature is limited on the impact that this level of activity has on children in the early-to-middle years, specifically on the development and maintenance of rituals, routines, and relationships in the family. Previous research has focused on adolescents and young adults.A qualitative study was conducted using a grounded theory approach, examining the role that participation of children aged five to ten years in elite EEA has on rituals, routines, and the development and maintenance of relationships in families. Data collection was conducted during the state mandated lockdown in Michigan due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 parent participants: 16 mothers and one father, with children ranging in ages from five to ten, seven boys and thirteen girls. The instrument focused on their children's participation in EEA during the 2019-20 school year. The EEA included (a) travel hockey, (b) dance, (c) travel baseball, (d) gymnastics, (e) travel soccer, and (d) cheerleading. Participants ranged in age from 35 to 56 years, with a mean of 39.5 years and a median of 42 years of age.The qualitative data were analyzed using ATLAS ti.©. Based on data analysis of the 17 recorded interviews, ranging from 20 to 60 minutes, 115 codes, 14 categories, and seven themes emerged. Findings indicated that parents perceived both advantages and disadvantages related to their children's participation in EEA. The parents also reported that their children's EEA participation resulted in the family acquiring and adapting rituals and routines to maintain their children's level of participation, specifically the acquisition of secondary skills (e.g., interpersonal, time management, and independence) was perceived by parents to be a result of their children's participation in EEA. Furthermore, this study provides a framework that may be helpful to consider for EEA organizations when developing and maintaining their programs, holistically considering the children's interests including the potential impact EEA participation has on family homelife.
