There is a problem in the commercial set-net salmon fishing industry in Alaska, which has seen a reduction in the average annual ex-vessel value of salmon caught from $13 million between the years 2007 to 2011, to just over $2.5 million in 2012. This problem impacts commercial fisheries due to declining commercial harvests, which reduces the income of over 1,100 commercial fishing businesses within Cook Inlet, Alaska. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand and describe the most common response methods and strategies used by set-net commercial salmon fishery businesses, where a sample of 12 current set-net commercial fishing business owners were asked questions related to the research questions, specifically what changes or coping strategies are being employed due to changes in the commercial fishing system. The methodology for this study was to conduct anonymous online surveys with the owners of the commercial set-net salmon fishing businesses. The theoretical framework focuses on contextualizing the diversification of fisheries as a method to understand how a firm, in this case a commercial fishing operation, can diversify or change operating strategies, based on changes in the fishing sector. A significant takeaway from this study showed that most of the participants fell into the predictions of the theoretical framework, with most fishing operations choosing to cope with various strategies instead of leaving the business, most of them continuing to operate despite the consensus that this business will most likely be eliminated due to legislation, user group battles, or loss of fish habitat. The implications of this study are that without significant government intervention, and expert fisheries management, on behalf of the commercial fishing businesses, they will continue to lose revenue which could lead to the collapse of the fishery altogether.
