In the field of preschool education, positive behavior support (PBS) has emerged as the most successful program for the decrease in behaviors among the preschool population. This phenomenological study examines the perceived obstacles faced with implementation of PBS at a Long Island preschool from the perspectives of nine educational leaders and has identified the steps taken by these leaders to overcome these obstacles. Through interviews, a focus group, the use of an anonymous survey including a sample size of fifty-one school personnel and observations, data were collected and analyzed. The most common answers that have emerged overall from the data collected in this study from both leaders and school personnel regarding implementation challenges of PBS include: a) lack of support from school personnel for the PBS system, b) lack of consistency in use by school personnel; c) lack of time to train, review, coach and model for school personnel; and d) lack of data collection. The results of this phenomenological study show that relevant professional development opportunities and ongoing coaching of school personnel were significant factors perceived as necessary for increased success with implementation of the PBS program.
