In this dissertation I argue that the comparative study of ethopoeia, persuasive characterization, in the works of Terence and rhetorical or oratorical authors demonstrates evidence that Terence is working in and contributing to a shared Greco-Roman literary and rhetorical culture. In Chapter 1, I discuss past scholarship, my methodology and the historical context of Terence's writing to establish a foundation for my main argument. In Chapter 2, I analyze the similarities in the use and presentation of ethopoeia in Terence's plays and Lysias 1. I argue that the similarities in the manner and content demonstrate Terence's engagement with shared rhetorical and social-cultural aspects of Lysias' speech. In Chapter 3, I explore stock characterization and it's use in Terentian metatheater to show the ways Terence engages with conventions found in both drama and oratory. Finally, in Chapter 4, I look at Terence's contribution to the Roman rhetorical tradition through comparisons to Cato and the fragmentary republican orators and discuss the inclusion of Terence's plays as examples and references in later oratory and rhetorical theory.
