Involvement in theatre may provide individuals with an important and meaningful experience. Some individuals participate in theatre for a short period of time, while others prolong these temporary affiliations and continue to be engaged throughout their lives. The third place theoretical concept offers a useful framework in fully exploring how individuals gather together to share a common purpose, engage in creative expression, and develop a sense of belonging. A third place is identified as a space where individuals socialize, strong relationships are formed, ideas are exchanged, individual diversity is valued, and a sense of community is created. To examine how theatre makers describe the theatre experience as a third place, a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews of current and active theatre makers with ten or more years of experience across community, academic, and professional theatre was conducted. The findings of this study revealed the characteristics of a theatre third place include the physical, social, and emotional qualities as well as authenticity of place as significant features for theatre makers. Furthermore, a theatre third place offers benefits and challenges for theatre makers, yet experiencing both aspects influenced continued dedication to theatre engagement. This study emphasizes that when individuals identify an experience as a third place, it creates deep, sentimental, and lifelong attachments.
