The purpose of the research was to fill the need to study the body image perceptions of male collegiate athletes by examining the prevalence of disordered eating among male collegiate athletes, differences between lean and non-lean male athletes, how male collegiate athletes describe their feelings toward their bodies, and how coaches influence male athletes' perception of body image. Two previously validated questionnaires were used to create an online survey with mixed qualitative and quantitative questions. The survey was distributed online to male collegiate athletes in the United States. Quantitative questions were analyzed using independent samples t-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests, to compare differences within lean and non-lean athletes. Statistically significant findings for subscales 'Feelings about Being an Athlete' and 'Your Body and Sports' were reported. Neither 'Feelings about Your Body' and "Feelings about Eating' subscales revealed statistically significant findings. Chi-Square analysis was conducted to determine association between disordered eating patterns and sport type. There were no strong associations found for any of the subscales. Qualitative answers were coded using a priori thematic analysis, based upon the Communication Theory of Identity model. Findings revealed that lean athletes express more negative feelings toward their bodies, confirming previous research that indicates lean athletes are more prone to disordered body image. Collectively, both lean and non-lean athletes reported coaches' responses impact athletes' body image. Findings from this study may help inform coaches and athletic departments with the need for preventative body image education for athletes.
