A substantial subgroup of individuals with an eating disorder also experience problematic substance use behaviors. There are very few integrated treatment options for both EDs and SUDs. As such, dually diagnosed individuals often go back and forth between SUD treatment and ED treatment, as it is often found that treatment of one disorder exacerbates the other (Dennis, Pryor, & Brewerton 2014). The current investigation utilized an uncontrolled pre/post treatment design to determine the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to concurrently treat eating disorders and substance misuse in a sample of seven females in a partial hospitalization ED treatment program. Matched-Pairs Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests were done to detect pre/post differences at the group level on the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and several items from the Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM). Due to the small sample size, Reliable Change was also calculated to further validate individual differences observed on these measures. Reductions on the EDE-Q were found with a large effect size and a small effect size was found for reductions on the DERS. A change in substance use was not detected.
