Acceptance and mindfulness-based therapies (AMTs) represent a group of cognitive and behavioral treatments that have recently been applied to eating disorder psychopathology. Although emerging evidence suggests that AMTs may be an effective treatment for certain forms of eating disorders, little is known about the process by which AMTs exert their influence on eating disorder symptoms. The current study utilized a network analysis framework to model the interactive structure of eating disorder symptoms, and examine symptom connectivity as a potential process of change associated with AMTs for eating disorders. Eating disorder symptoms were measured eight times a day for 10 days among a sample of 58 college students, along with baseline measures of eating disorder severity, acceptance, and mindfulness. Directed group-level and individual (N = 1) symptom networks were calculated, and an individual symptom connectivity score was modeled for each participant. Results found that eating disorder symptom connectivity was significantly associated with eating disorder severity, and mediated the relationship between AMT processes and overall levels of eating disorder psychopathology. Taken together, the current study provides initial support for symptom network connectivity as an important symptom-level treatment construct in AMTs for eating disorders.
