The Internet Movie Database, or IMDB, is a website that has existed for thirty years, is visited by millions of people annually worldwide, and provides hundreds of thousands of fully-accessible amateur film and television reviews by its members. But in spite of this, IMDB's cultural and rhetorical influence has been, for the most part, unstudied by rhetorical scholars. As one might expect, the rhetorical patterns in its members' film and television reviews have changed over the past three decades, but in the past five years, there have been notable increases in misogynistic rhetoric, especially when a film or television series featured a leading agentic female character. Considering the major changes in acceptable American public discourse over the past five years, I argue that these increases in misogynistic rhetoric within the reviews are not coincidental, but rather a result of the normalization of such rhetoric by President Donald Trump, since he began his campaign in 2015, along with the coinciding 2015 presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. In order to prove this in the following thesis, I analyzed thousands of IMDB member reviews from two films, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Terminator: Dark Fate, and two television series, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery, that feature leading agentic female characters and reflect over twenty years of specific rhetorical patterns.
