College coaches look at a variety of factors when considering a prospective athlete. While there are multiple methods for testing the psychological and physical capabilities of an athlete, there has been no consistent method for examining or identifying coachability. In addition, the term coachability has not been well understood by coaches or by athletes. Consequently, the field of sport psychology has lacked a model for coachability. This was an exploratory, qualitative, case study designed to examine coachability from the perspective of athletes and coaches. Utilizing the data collected and analyzed from semistructured interviews, a new model of coachability was created. Twelve individuals participated in this study (four NCAA collegiate men's head basketball coaches and eight male, NCAA collegiate basketball athletes). Four themes were identified in relation to this study and are represented in the resulting coachability model: awareness, trusting relationship, willingness to learn, and mutual respect. This is information that coaches can implement to assist in the recruitment process. Recommendations for future studies include studying the responses by female athletes and female coaches, expanding the original study to male athletes and male coaches in all sports, and expanding the Model of Coachability created in this study.
