The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of African Americans in the coaching profession. Guided by the purpose, the current study answered four fundamental questions: (1) Do African American male former collegiate student-athletes display athletic identity marked by a self- and social identity centered around the athletic self? (2) Does athletic identity foreclosure contribute to the difficulty found in the coaching job procurement process? (3) Does athletic identity influence the career and geographic mobility found in the coaching profession? (4) Does identity priming increase athletic identity foreclosure in career-related settings? The researcher used open-ended, semi-structured interviews (Vagle, 2018) to collect rich accounts of 10 African American male former collegiate student-athletes occupying leadership positions within the interscholastic coaching profession in Texas. The phenomenological approach to data collection was employed to establish four emergent themes related to salient athletic identity, athletic identity foreclosure, athletic career transition, and career-procurement and advancement within the interscholastic coaching profession. The four emergent themes were (a) communal athletic identity, (b) transitions, (c) necessary nomadism, and (d) seen but not heard. The results delivered an inimitable inquiry into African American male experiences in interscholastic coaching, while employing an inquisitive theoretical approach to qualitative sports literature. Lived experiences, conclusions, and other relevant information will be introduced in the discussion.
