The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of Black assistant high school football coaches who aspire to be head football coaches at the 6A level in Texas. Guided by the purpose, the current study answered the research question: what are the factors that contribute to the lack of Black head football coaches at the 6A level in Texas. The researcher used open-ended, semi-structured interviews (Vagle, 2018) to collect vivid accounts of eleven Black assistant high school football coaches who aspire to be head coaches at the 6A level. The researcher utilized a phenomenological approach to collect data in order to establish themes related to coaching experience, networking, interview and hiring committees, professional development, and diversity within the coaching profession at the interscholastic level in Texas. The three emergent themes were (a) network, (b) access discrimination, and (c) racism. The results delivered a unique inquiry into the interscholastic coaching experiences of Black assistant coaches. Utilizing an analytical and theoretical approach to qualitative sports literature, the researcher provides an introduction and other relevant information necessary for future research at the interscholastic level of sport.
