The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (ImPACT) uses baseline concussion test scores compared with scores acquired post-injury to help determine whether a concussion has been sustained. Although a 2009 study found that almost 95% of certified athletic trainers at the high school and collegiate level administered baseline neurocognitive testing to their athletes, only 51.9% reported examining the score's validity. The presence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on the validity of an athlete's ImPACT baseline profile was explored. Utilizing the validity indicators on the ImPACT, this study sought to determine whether the presence of ADHD serves as a mediating variable in increasing the likelihood of an athlete producing an invalid score profile. Results found that participants diagnosed with ADHD were more likely to produce invalid baseline scores on the ImPACT. Similar results were found when controlling for sex, race, age, sport played, mouthguard use, and the number of previous concussions. When controlling for ADHD, sex, race, sport played, and mouthguard use each played a significant role in determining profile validity. These same effects were found when ADHD was not included in the analysis. When ADHD was removed from the model, the participant's age was found to negatively affect the likelihood their ImPACT score would be valid. This finding suggests the relationship between age and ImPACT validity is explained by the presence of an ADHD diagnosis.
