Intercollegiate athletics play a substantial role in the lives of student-athletes. An abundance of researchers have explored the dynamic relationship between athletic involvement and academic performance in athletes; however, very few researchers have explored the impact of team culture on athletes' academic performance. There is also an abundance of research available on NCAA athletics and academics but not on other intercollegiate associations, such as the NAIA. The purpose of this study was to explore the team culture of one NAIA football program with a history of exceeding academic standards. The participating university is a private, non-profit institution located in the Midwestern United States. The university campus is in a rural setting and hosts approximately 1,500 students. The researcher assessed the factors in the football team culture that contributed to student-athletes' academic performance. The research design implemented a qualitative approach to interview and collect responses from the head football coach, the university athletic director, the assistant coach/academic coordinator, an academic support services director, an academic support services coordinator, a peer tutor, and eight football student-athletes. From the interview responses, the researcher identified three prominent themes: commitment to academics, interdepartmental collaboration, and tutoring. The theoretical foundation for the study was systems theory, which postulates that the effectiveness of a system is founded on collaboration between multiple interrelated and interdependent parts. Reflecting on systems theory, the researcher concluded that the collaboration of multiple stakeholders was essential to the development of an academically successful team culture.
