A vast majority of people in society assume that sports participation automatically leads to positive character-building experiences (Bredemeier & Shields, 2001; Coakley, 2009; M. I. Jones, Dunn, Holt, Sullivan, & Bloom, 2011). The job of coaches has taken on a unique role, becoming the key to athletic development in sports (Agans, Su, & Ettekal, 2018). Sports participation can help athletes with personal development of character and build relationships with coaches and teammates. The current study included 50 parents (mothers and fathers) whose children participated in the Boys & Girls Clubs in the eastern part of the United States whose children participated on a high school sports team at a public, private, or home school program. Participants were a purposive sample of parents, selected based on their willingness to recall their student-athlete experience with their high school coaches. The study administered a Likert questionnaire of open-ended questions and a focus group to parents to determine coaches' perceived influence on the character development and academic success of their child. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore and describe the experiences of parents of high school student-athletes regarding the perceived influence of their child's athletic coaches on their academic success and character development. The research examined various aspects of the coach-athlete relationship and its roles in sports through character development and academics. While there has been extensive research on the coach's role in sports, for the coach-athlete relationship there has been little research on parents' point of view on coaches' impact. The current study documented the behaviors and abilities of high school coaches as perceived and remembered by the parents.
