The purpose of this quantitative experimental study was to determine if, and to what extent, pre-test sport-confidence and the use of a sport-specific mental imagery intervention predict post-test sport-confidence of collegiate athletes with an orthopedic injury. The PETTLEP Model of Motor Imagery informed the sport-specific mental imagery experimental intervention and the Trait Sport-Confidence (TSCI) and the State Sport-Confidence Inventory (SSCI) assessed sport-confidence. The sample consisted of 68 collegiate athletes with an orthopedic injury. Two research questions were stated for trait and state sport-confidence respectively. Two corresponding multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the data with the predictor variables of pre-test scores on the TSCI and the SSCI and group (experimental and control). Results indicated that pre-test trait sport-confidence and the use of the imagery intervention significantly predict post-test trait sport-confidence, F(2, 65) = 57.419, p < .001, adj. R2 = .627 and pre-test state sport-confidence and the use of the imagery intervention significantly predict post-test state sport-confidence, F(2, 65) = 73.266, p < .001, adj. R2 = .683. The use of the imagery intervention was a significant predictor only of post-test state sport-confidence, β = -.279, t = -4.047, p < .001. Based on these results, sport-specific mental imagery may be implemented into return-to-play protocols for collegiate athletes with an orthopedic injury to enhance state sport-confidence.
