The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative design was to determine if or to what extent there was an effect of a coach's sex and athletic director's sex on (a) LMX quality (as measured by the LMX-7) or (b) turnover intentions (as measured by a 10-item scale by Hom, Griffeth, & Sellaro, 1984) of head collegiate coaches in NCAA DI, DII, and NAIA institutions. Using the Similarity Attraction Paradigm (SAP) the research questions and corresponding hypotheses addressed if or to what extent the demographic differences related to the coach and athletic director's (AD) biological sex significantly influenced the LMX quality as perceived by the coaches and the coaches' voluntary turnover intentions. 126 head coaches (42 women and 84 men) in the Mid-South Region of the United States fully completed the online questionnaire for this research. The data was analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance. The results showed that the interaction of the coach and AD's sex was not statistically significant in relation to LMX quality (p = 0.55) or voluntary turnover intentions (p = 0.36) of the coach, thus rejecting the two hypotheses of this study. Several conclusions and implications are discussed in detail. This study draws into question SAP's relevance in collegiate athletics and suggests that the unique environment of college sports may complicate this theory's successful application.
