The problem addressed by this study concerned the limited information about what student-athletes perceive about their relationship with their coach and how their personality type may affect that relationship and their success as an athlete. This qualitative case study investigated how athletes perceive the influence of their personality type on success, and how athletes perceive their personality type affects their coach-athlete relationship. Participants included 9 collegiate/university-level athletes who, as a result of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, were sent interview questions by email. Myers-Briggs personality type theory served as the study's framework. Research questions focused on understanding how student-athletes perceive or understand how their personality type is related to their success as an athlete and is related to their relationship to their coach. Participants took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test and then were given the results. Test results were incorporated into the interview questions sent by email student-athletes. Responses to questions were coded and analyzed thematically using NVivo. Resulting themes included: (a) cultivating trust and connections, (b) assertiveness, (c) influences of personality types on an athlete-coach relationship, (d) planning and communication, and (e) support and motivation. The assertiveness theme was the only one not consistent with the research literature. Results suggest athletes perceive that their personality type influences their athletic success as well as their athlete-coach relationship The findings may provide coaches insight into how an athlete's personality may affect their relationship with them and how a student's personality type can be used in a positive way to improve their leadership skills and athletic success. Future research should examine whether there are differences in personality types depending on the sport the student-athlete plays and how those differences affect performance on the field and the nature of the athlete-coach relationship.
