Using a mixed-methods phenomenological approach the researcher explored the role of burnout for NCAA Division I female head coaches who leave coaching to become athletic administrators. Surveys and interviews were conducted with current female athletic administrators with head coaching experience (N=18). Results showed that when compared to burnout, only work/life balance was identified to be a factor that pushed a female head coach out of coaching into athletic administration. Additionally, the greatest motivators were financial considerations, work/life balance, and job stress. The Athletic Administrators responses showed that aspects of the job, demands of time and travel, missing important life events and aspirations for career advancement emerged as influencing factors in the decision to leave coaching for athletic administration.
