This quantitative research study examined demographic and academic variables that affect the academic success of student-athletes at a Division II university. Secondary data were used to determine the relationship between student-athletes' grade point average (GPA) and their gender and race, athletic scholarship status, and participation in an individual or team sport (sport type). The secondary data were obtained for the academic years 2013-2018. Data were analyzed for all five years combined (2013-2018), as well as broken down by academic year (2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018). Spearman correlations demonstrated for all academic years a significant negative correlation between gender and GPA, a significant positive correlation between race and GPA, and a significant positive correlation between sport type and GPA. The individual academic year 2015-2016, as well as all five academic years combined (2013-2018), were the only sequences that demonstrated a significant negative correlation between athletic scholarship status and GPA. Results demonstrated female student-athletes had higher GPAs than male student-athletes, White student-athletes had higher GPAs than non-White student-athletes, student-athletes who played individual sports had higher GPAs than those who played team sports, and athletic scholarship student-athletes had lower GPAs than non-scholarship student-athletes. Lastly, hierarchical multiple regression models demonstrated gender, race, and sport type were predictive variables of GPA for every academic year. The academic years combined (2013-2018) and the academic year 2014-2015 were the only models in which athletic scholarship status was predictive. Findings have implications for understanding the unique population of student-athletes competing at the Division II level.
