Registered nurses who practice in acute care settings report alarming levels of missed nursing care. Missed nursing care is referred to as errors of omission or care left undone (Jones, Hamilton, & Murray, 2015; Kalisch, 2006; Kalisch, Landstrom, & Williams, 2009; Kalisch, McLaughlin, & Dabney, 2012; Kalisch, Tschannen, Lee, & Friese, 2011; Kalisch, Xie, & Dabney, 2014; Menard, 2014). New graduate nurses experience unique challenges during the transition to practice, which include difficulties communicating, problem solving, organizing and prioritizing patient care, delegating care to assistive personnel, unrealistic expectations and lack of colleague support (Bjerknes & Bjork, 2012; Duchscher, 2009; Dyess & Sherman, 2009; Kalisch, 2015; Missen, McKenna, & Beauchamp, 2014; Martin & Wilson, 2011; Morrow, 2009; Spector et al., 2015).The purpose of this study was to explore whether a relationship exists between the challenges new graduate nurses experience during their first year of transition to practice and the incidence and prevalence of missed care they report. In a quantitative descriptive correlation design, new graduate nurses completed the MISSCARE Survey introduction and Section A and a Likert-type questionnaire exploring the challenges new graduate nurses experience. The MISSCARE Survey introduction focuses on demographic characteristics of the respondent: age, gender, education level, amount of experience, unit type, number of hours worked, satisfaction of the job and the profession, perception of staffing adequacy and teamwork (Kalisch, 2015). Section A of the MISSCARE Survey is a self-report instrument that measures the incidence and prevalence of missed nursing care. A self-report Likert-type questionnaire (developed and piloted by the investigator) measured the new graduates' perceptions of unique challenges they experience during the first year of transition to practice.
