The nation's older adult population continues to grow, indicating an ongoing need for caregivers to provide assistance, and an increasing demand for family members to step into the role of family caregivers. Research has expanded to examine differences in caregiving experiences in a culturally-diverse society, which suggested that cultural values influence coping and social support, thus impacting health outcomes of family caregivers. In this study, a diverse sample of 88 family caregivers of older adults with a range of chronic illnesses and disabilities completed measures of familism (i.e., familial obligation, perceived support from the family), quality of life, and coping. Moderation analyses were run to examine whether coping style influenced the relationship between familism values and quality of life in these family caregivers. It was predicted that maladaptive coping would moderate the relationship between familial obligation and family caregivers' quality of life, while adaptive coping would moderate the relationship between perceived support and family caregivers' quality of life. Results indicated that there was no moderation in either of these main hypotheses. However, both maladaptive and adaptive coping styles were found to be negatively associated with quality of life. These findings warrant further investigation into coping in family caregivers. Additionally, the examination of cultural values should remain imperative to the caregiving experience, given the increasing ethnic minority populations throughout the United States.
