The purpose of this quantitative causal comparative research study, using the ex post facto survey the Student version of the Leadership Practices Inventory (S-LPI), was to assess the influence of computer gaming upon learning leadership skills. The theoretical foundations were transformational leadership (TL), the five practices of exemplary leadership (FPOEL), and digital game based learning (DGBL). The research question was if or to what extent was there a significant difference between the TL occurrences, operationalized as FPOELs, model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart, when, in a college setting, when playing massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) as a solo gamer vs. as a group gamer. The unit of analysis was 18-year old or older MMORPG gaming college enrollees. The units of observation were the FPOELs. SurveyMonkey paid respondents were the sample disaggregated into the independent categorical multinomial variable's groups of 129 MMORPG Solo Gaming Mode Group and 171 MMORPG Group Gaming Mode Group gamers. The S-LPI was scored to generate five FPOEL means for the MMORPG gaming groups. The Hotelling's T Squared Multivariant Test was used to report there was a statistically significant difference between the two MMORPG gaming mode groups across all five FPOEL dependent variables. TL occurred more in the MMORPG Group Gaming Group than in the MMORPG Solo Gaming Group. F(5, 294) = 3.342, p < .01; Wilks' Λ = .946; partial η2 = .054. All five no difference TL occurrence FPOEL null hypotheses were rejected. Indications that TL occurred during MMORPG gaming led the researcher to suggest DGBL as MMORPGs could be used to practice leadership skills in virtual worlds.
