The present study tested the direct effects of meaning-focused coping on positive and negative outcomes in dementia caregivers and whether trait resilience in this population is associated with meaning-focused coping. Adult child caregivers (n = 219) of persons with dementia completed measures of demographics, burden, meaning, and trait resilience at Time 1. Two weeks later, the same caregivers completed a retrospective measure of meaning-focused coping over the previous two weeks, and again completed several measures of meaning and burden. Path analysis was employed to test paths among variables in the model. Results showed that after controlling for initial meaning, meaning-focused coping exerted a direct effect on meaning at the end of the study period. Meaning-focused coping also mediated the association between meaning assessed at Time 1 and meaning assessed at Time 2. However, meaning-focused coping was unrelated to burden at either time of measurement. In addition, trait resilience exerted a significant direct effect on meaning-focused coping. The findings extend prior the stress process model by demonstrating the significant and positive relationships between meaning-focused coping, resilience, and meaning during chronically stressful experiences such as dementia caregiving. Results also inform clinical interventions that promote meaning and resilience in caregivers.
