Liberal Arts and Science (LAS) programs in the United States have been facing increasing pressure to help students translate their education into meaningful career opportunities. As students across the United States flock to schools that offer practical degree programs with clear career pathways, LAS programs are facing pressure to change in order to remain competitive. Observers of higher education have suggested that career services programs in the LAS are underdeveloped and failing to adequately prepare students to articulate clear career goals and market the relevance of their chosen degree programs. Other scholars have advised that the appropriate path to remedy this shortcoming is through programs that integrate career preparation into the LAS curriculum. Using 8 years of data collected through a post-graduation exit survey, this dissertation examines how students in a Liberal Arts and Management program engage with job information sources in the process of searching for employment following graduation. Findings indicate that students who participated in the Liberal Arts and Management program engage with the most effective job information sources (networking with previously unknown professionals) with greater frequency, and receive job offers earlier than comparable groups of students who did not participate in the program. These findings lead to recommendations for practitioners and faculty working with LAS students on strategies for integrating career preparation and planning activities within a LAS curriculum as well as recommendations for future research.
