The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a student-athlete leadership development program at a large, Midwestern university by looking at its impact on the leadership behaviors of student-athlete participants. Utilizing organizational effectiveness as a framework, this study examined differences in perceived leadership behaviors from the perspectives of multiple constituents: student-athletes and their respective coaches. In addition, this study examined whether formal leadership titles, gender, length of participation, and year in school played significant roles in predicting the leadership behaviors of student-athletes. The leadership development program that was evaluated in this study was grounded in leadership theory. To the researcher's knowledge, this study was the first of its kind that sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a leadership development program through examination of the leadership behaviors of student-athlete participants. Student-athletes reported significant increases in their leadership behaviors as a result of participation and were highly satisfied with their experience in the leadership development program. Though coaches did not report significant, positive increases in the leadership behaviors of their respective student-athletes, they were highly satisfied with the program. As a result, the researcher deems the program to be mostly effective overall. Results are discussed in further detail, as well as practical and theoretical implications.
