Identity theft is a crime that has become pervasive in the past ten years and has affected individuals and organizations in the globally. The victim is caught unaware and is considered a spectator to the crime. Identity theft has affected approximately 10% of consumers over age 16 in the U.S., and 199,000 cases of tax return fraud were reported to the IRS during 2018. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between victimization and the demographic characteristics of reported victims of identity theft within the U.S. Accountants and tax preparers are consistently tasked with assisting clients subsequent to an identity theft incident. The quantitative study utilized 107,712 records gathered in the National Crime Victimization Survey. The findings from the study suggest a correlation between tax-related identity theft and age, sex, region, and population density. A binomial logistic regression analysis was performed yielding statistically significant results for region when analyzing general identity theft (p = 0.087). Further analysis of tax related identity theft yielded more significant results whereby region and population density were found to be contributors of higher incidences of victimization along with sex (p=0.023) and age (p<0.001). Focus on the demographics could impact tax preparation professionals, CPAs, and tax attorneys by providing consulting tools which may assist in identifying potential victims of tax-related identity theft. Policymakers and the IRS could utilize this information by targeting educational resources toward populations which are more vulnerable to tax-related identity theft and thereby mitigate government losses due to fraudulent refunds. Future research should include regional information by state which was not readily available in the data sourced for this study, however, local authorities and taxing agencies may have information for future analysis.
