The application of the death penalty in the United States is a topic of everlasting controversy. Research has shown evidence of bias in its application and many continue to question its constitutionality within the context of the Eighth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments. Despite years of challenging capital punishment and research supporting the need for revision, a large portion of the United States population continues to support its use. This study aimed to determine how individual personality traits amongst the general population can assist in determining how one may view capital punishment and the justice system according to due process and crime control models. To what extent does an individual's personality impact decisions made regarding support of important sanctions such as capital punishment? Can this information be used to assist in capital jury selection? The main goal of this dissertation was to answer these research questions in an effort to expand the minimal amount of research which already exists on this topic.
