This project aimed to compile relevant literature to inform the application of group therapy to address paraprofessional self-care needs in nonpublic school settings and incorporated a trauma-informed lens to address secondary traumatic stress issues. In order to align with social justice and person-centered frameworks, this project constructed a group therapy model that addressed the unique needs of group members, including their experiences of paraprofessional work responsibilities and relationships to systems of power and privilege. The project also specifically explored applications of trauma-informed care as it related to secondary stress symptoms at work, considered implications for clients who are often labeled as having an emotional and behavioral disorder and emphasized the practice of self-care. The project sessions were outlined for use in nonpublic school settings or other settings wherein paraprofessionals are relied on and may be at risk of experiencing secondary stress.
