This qualitative case study explores experiences of educators within one rural elementary school as they implement outdoor education as an instructional tool. Specifically, the factors that impacted teacher decision making regarding utilization of outdoor education were examined. Along with those factors, the perceived challenges and benefits that emerged through the data analysis process were a significant aspect of better understanding the teacher experience of outdoor education as an instructional tool. In order to ensure accuracy and data triangulation, the study incorporated multiple sources of data (interviews, participant reflections, and site visits) along with member checking throughout the process to allow the researcher a more complete picture of the teacher experience. These data were analyzed and coded according to broad themes. Within each theme, a closer analysis of the rich narrative data sources led to the emergence of specific themes in response to each research question. Results of this study suggest that there are specific procedural and affective aspects that influence teacher decision making. Additionally, the self-reported benefits and challenges of implementing outdoor education shared by the participants add to the growing body of research that seeks to expand access to the nature in daily life. Overall, all participants shared that this experience was positive and that it would continue to impact the ways in which they seek out access to outdoors.
