Low literacy achievement levels among pupils in basic school in Ghana are a cause of great concern. One of the problems contributing to low literacy outcomes is the limited expertise among teachers to provide quality and effective reading instruction. This research study sought to provide a better insight into the role public colleges of education in Ghana play in the preparation of teacher trainees towards teaching early reading instruction at public schools of basic education. The literature review examined effective reading interventions in general, and teacher preparation and practice in reading instruction in Ghana, in particular. A qualitative research was conducted among tutors and teacher trainees at a college of education to gain insight into how teacher trainees were prepared towards teaching reading instruction. This research study found that the training offered by the colleges of education is largely inadequate to prepare teacher trainees to teach reading skills effectively. There is an urgent need for a major improvement of teacher training in reading instruction for teacher trainees to acquire a solid foundation in knowledge of basic components in reading, reading processes, reading strategies, reading practices, and reading theories. The study also revealed that training in mother tongue reading instruction is not given the needed attention. Future research should look into improved training in mother tongue literacy instruction, and the availability and feasibility of introducing formalized reading programs into basic schools.
