This autoethnographic study explored interconnections between ecological empathy and artistic creativity as having a potential influence on my experience as an artist. The interaction of my creativity with ecology was used as a lens through three chronological and artistically developmental periods of my life to address three larger questions: 1) In what ways can ecological empathy and artistic creativity present in childhood? 2) In what ways, when and how may personal experiences, and perceptions of ecological empathy inform my artistic creativity and visual art? 3) How might ecological empathy and artistic creativity together inform an ecocentric worldview? Three important chronological and artistic periods framed the inquiry: A) young artist/childhood (ages 0-12); B) emerging artist/adolescence-young-adult (ages 13-35); C) professional artist/adult (ages 36-65). Autoethnography (AE) was used to unfold the relationships through three types of data gathering within each period: 1) Narratives: reports of events, feelings and experiences; 2) Art: related artistic work; 3) Findings: data contextualized with literature in the social sciences and the humanities that explored creativity, ecology, ecopsychology, and art from varied perspectives. Integration, analysis and interpretation of the literature, narratives and art followed in each period. Three main themes emerged in the research. The first theme revealed the importance of a supportive family for my creative personality and artistic potential. The second theme revealed the influence of a sustained sense of place and nature engagement on my identity as an artist and in my visual art. The third theme revealed perspectives of creativity and ecology viewed as a shared awareness that influenced art and ecocentricism. The themes supported a strong personal association which also resonated with the literature as one potential developmental pattern-linking ecological empathy and artistic creativity, throughout one's life as an artist. The themes may be pertinent to artists, ecologists, creativity researchers, and other appreciative individuals, and help further a broader way of knowing and experiencing life as a creative human being. In raising awareness through beauty and empathetic involvement (rather than fear or guilt) we can honor and preserve our environment while knowing ourselves as independent and creatively active participants in a process to heal, sustain, and cherish our earth.
