This study has shown evidence for using a modified version of the miracle question (MQ) as an effective treatment intervention for sex therapy with couples reporting low sexual satisfaction and a history of childhood sexual abuse. The self-reported experiences of the participants in this study indicated that asking couples to collaborate in describing a miracle sexual encounter in a therapeutic setting produces successful outcomes. The study consisted of 11 heterosexual married couples reporting low sexual satisfaction and childhood sexual abuse in the wife's history. Each couple was interviewed by the researcher about their participated experiences of the miracle question intervention amid two 40-minute therapy sessions. An interpretive phenomenological analysis was conducted with the first-person perspectives from a data collection of follow-up interviews. Results show five super-ordinate themes and two significant emergent themes within two of the super-ordinate themes. Themes are: experiencing mutuality, uncomfortable to hopeful, an "emotion" shift, new way of communicating about sex, developing an intimacy playbook, re-experiencing sex in a positive way, and positive outcomes. In this study, results showed the MQ helped to build and reinforce positive emotions amongst all the couples participating in this research study, supporting Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theoretical framework (Fredrickson, 2001).
